Psychoanalysis with a psychoanalytic candidate (a psychoanalyst in training): Should I see someone in training

This is a good question. Often people assume that therapists, in psychoanalytic training, are inexperienced. Typically, that is not the case. To be elligible for psychoanalytic training, generally as a minimum, one must complete: a doctorate in clinical psychology or counseling psychology, a medical degree and a psychiatric residency, a masters in social work, a masters in counseling and/or some other advanced mental health training. Therefore, sometimes, psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, social workers and others, enter psychoanalytic training with significant experience. The best way to clarify your analyst's background is to ask them about it directly.

Beyond this, there are other ways to obtain psychoanalysis on a sliding scale basis
